CHAPTER

THIRTY

The court and jury and lawyers listened to the FBI recording of Lisa Dearing’s interview. It was oral testimony only—no video. She sat beside Thaddeus at the counsel table and he could feel her tighten up when the recording kicked on. Everyone in the room watched for the jury’s reaction as the playback began.

First came five or ten minutes of setting the stage—questions by Agent Mack meant to relax Lisa and let her feel she was safe speaking to him. Of course, she wasn’t anywhere near safe, Thaddeus thought as he viewed the phony solicitude being played out on-screen. And then it began for real:

FBI: “Rex Roundy handed you the gun he’d carried in Afghanistan for what reason?”

LISA: “He was describing the discomfort of wearing the pistol every day all day. He handed it to me to feel the weight.”

FBI: “Did he tell you the gun was loaded or unloaded?”’

LISA: “He never mentioned it. Just handed it to me and I took it.”

FBI: “Did you mean to shoot him?”

LISA: “Of course.”

Beside him, Lisa gasped and shook her head violently from side to side.

FBI: “Why did you mean to shoot him?”

LISA: “He lied to me about being married. I would never have missed my pills had I known he was married. He told me he wanted children.”
